UFSM 2017 – EN

The Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) is located in the geographic center of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, 290 km from the capital, Porto Alegre.

The institution has 25 auditoriums with a total capacity to accommodate 4,177 people, two University Restaurants, a Central Library with 92,535 volumes (books and theses), Sector Libraries with 63,783 volumes (books and theses), a Teaching Hospital with 335 beds, a Veterinary Hospital and a Commercial Pharmacy School, Museums and a Planetarium. UFSM also offers a residential area, subject to socioeconomic registration carried out by the Pro-Rectory of Student Affairs, with the capacity to accommodate up to 1,805 students, although such availability depends on some factors. In addition to housing, registered students can apply for transportation assistance, meals, foreign language lessons, assistance grants and paid monitoring.

The 3rd Serial Selection Process consists of the UFSM Selection Process (80%) and the National High School Exam, Enem (20%), considering the score obtained in the Enem objective tests for the years 2016, 2015 or 2014, and the scores resulting from the classification stages. For candidates who took more than one exam, the score of the most recent one will be considered.

In the Serial Selection Process 3, an objective test will be carried out relating to the 3rd year of high school or equivalent (Selection Test 3 – PS 3), followed by a writing test.

After watching TV documentary about the Theory of Special Relativity, Murilo became very interested in learning more about the subject.

He asked his brother, who had read a lot about it, to give him more explanations on the subject.

The following three statements caught Murilo’s attention.

I. The laws of Physics are invariant in any inertial reference frame.

II. The speed of light in a vacuum has the same value for any observer, regardless of the relative motion between the light source and the observer.

III. Two events that occur simultaneously when perceived by an observer A will not be simultaneous when perceived by an observer B, who moves relative to A.

Which observation(s) by Murilo’s brother is/are correct?

a) Only I. b) Only II. c) Only I and III. d) Only II and III. e) I, II and II

third-year high school student decides to design an experiment to demonstrate the orientation of magnetic field lines around a straight wire carrying a constant electric current.

To do this, she prepares the following apparatus: copper wire passes through a hole in the top of a table and is then connected to a battery, so that an electric current flows through this wire towards the inside of the plane of the top .

Two compasses are placed on this top , so that the orientation of the needles can indicate the orientation of the magnetic field lines around the wire.

Which of the alternatives below correctly represents the orientation of the needle of each of the compasses?

Consider that the symbol represents an electric current flowing into the plane of the paper and  represents the compass needle, with its respective magnetic poles.

Ana and Bruno witnessed a scene while they were talking in front of a coffee shop: third person complained of having received an electric shock when touching the door of the truck in which he had been traveling for many kilometers in dry weather. Bruno was quick to provide the following explanation.

“ During the journey, electrical charges are created in the vehicle due to friction between the body and the atmospheric air. As a consequence, the electrical potential in the truck becomes different from the electrical potential of the Earth. When touching the truck , the person acts as a conductive medium that allows the flow of electrical charges between the vehicle and the Earth. Thus, an electrical current is established in this person, the physiological sensation of which is an electric shock.”

Ana, however, is more advanced than Bruno in her Physics studies and noticed an error in the explanation above. What correction should Ana have made in relation to Bruno’s explanation for the observed phenomenon?

a) Electric shock is the physiological sensation associated with the difference in electrical potential, not with electric current.

b) The person touching the truck cannot serve as a conductive medium, since the electrical resistance of organisms is always very high.

c) Since the truck is in contact with the surface, its electrical potential must necessarily be equal to the electrical potential of the Earth.

d) Electrical charges are not created under any circumstances, they are only transferred between the parts of an electrical system.

a) Friction cannot electrify metallic bodies, only insulators, such as plastic and paper.

Joana was rummaging through a box that had been in the attic of her great-grandfather’s house for many years and found a notebook that seemed to be very old. It was in a very poor state of conservation, with many signs of mold and holes made by moths. In one part of the notebook, however, she managed to read some incomplete sentences, reproduced below, and became curious about their meaning.

“ An electrical transformer is a device basically formed by two independent circuits without electrical contact (called respectively primary and secondary), each consisting of a wire wound around a core made of ferromagnetic material .

Its main use is to transfer energy between parts of the circuit and it operates with _____________ current.

Whenever the number of turns of the primary coil is greater than the number of turns of the secondary, the result is _____________ of the electromotive force at the secondary terminals. In this case, the power available at the secondary terminals will be ____________ of the primary.”

Which alternative correctly completes the gaps in the text read by Joana?

a) alternating – the decrease – equal to

b) continuous – the increase – equal to

c) alternating – the increase – greater than the

d) continuous – the decrease – less than the

e) alternating – the decrease – greater than the
